Leftover Foreign Change for Charity

I reached in my pocket while purchasing a holiday present today and came up with a British pound which had managed to migrate into my American money from the drawer where I drop foreign money — I frequently return home from faraway lands with at least one fistful of foreign change, though I do try to spend it before I leave . Or try to take it back next visit, as it’s great to have correct currency in hand upon arrival, although the currency has sometimes changed in the interim, making that not the best solution. It being the season of giving and me buying a present, I was reminded by today’s stray pound of another great option for unloading loose foreign loot after a trip: donating the money to Unicef’s Change for Good program . Drop coins into a Unicef envelope on the plane home and the nonprofit org will use the money to benefit children globally; a few Euros add up, too — Unicef has raised over $53 million this way since 1991. Thanksgiving Travel Planning – AAA Forecasts Air Downturn

Thanksgiving week travel may continue to be a bit easier (but probably not cheaper, though student airfares are fairly reasonable ) than usual this year: AAA recently reported that results of its now-annual Global Insight survey forecast that 38.4 million folks will be on the roads, airways and rails this Thanksgiving weekend, a very small increase of 1.4 percent (just above 548,000 travelers) over 2008. And 2008 was down 25.2 percent over 2007. Easy enough to conclude that airports, anyway, won’t be horribly crowded this year. Thursday (Thanksgiving day) will be the cheapest day to fly , but air travel’s not the only way to go.
